Comfort in quotes

Posted: | Last updated:

Saying your final goodbye to a dear pet is one of the hardest things you will ever have to do. After years of love, companionship and comfort, you suddenly find yourself with a hole in your heart that can be hard to fill. But remember, the great pain you are feeling reflects the great love you had for them.

As Winnie the Pooh rightly said,

“How lucky am I to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.”

Words are simple things, but they can be a source of huge comfort. Here is a selection of our favourite quotes, which we hope will bring you some peace, make you smile, and help heal that hole in your heart.

“Dogs lives are too short......their only fault, really.”

Agnes Sligh Turnbull

“The difference between friends and pets is that friends we allow into our company, pets we allow into our solitude.”

Robert Brault

“If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans.”

James Herriot

“I can’t see a way through” said the Boy.
“Can you see your next step?”
“Yes”
“Just take that” said the Horse.

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse, by Charlie Mackesy

“What greater gift than the love of a cat.”

Charles Dickens

“Dogs do speak, but only to those who know how to listen.”

Orhan Pamuk

“A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself.”

Josh Billings

“I believe cats to be spirits come to earth. A cat, I am sure, could walk on a cloud without coming through.”

Jules Verne

“The littlest feet make the biggest footprints in our hearts.”

“No matter how little money and how few possessions you own, having a dog makes you rich.”

Louis Sabin

“I have sometimes thought of the final cause of dogs having such short lives and I am quite satisfied it is in compassion to the human race; for if we suffer so much in losing a dog after an acquaintance of ten or twelve years, what would it be if they were to live double that time?”

Sir Walter Scott

“Although it’s difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow.”

“Those are dark clouds” said the Boy.
“Yes, but they will move on” said the Horse, “the blue sky above never leaves.”
